- Maintain good mental health. Most distractions come from within. We work at a level of efficiency that is determined by many limiting or facilitation factors: how we feel about ourselves, or past successes and failures, our value system, how we relate to authority figures and the list goes on an on.
- Internal physical factors are critical. Take care of your body. Get proper rest and nutrition, and maintain good physical health. The ancient wisdom, “A sound mind in a sound body.” A person who is physically ill or uncomfortable is not prepared for effective mental effort.
- External physical factors such as heat, lighting, and ventilation must be satisfactory. In order to do effective reading or studying, you must be comfortable and ready for work. All external factors which contribute to this readiness must be satisfactorily adjusted. Students and professionals often report that they have not been taught to concentrate and that they need practical and specific suggestions. Several brief recommendations are: Keep all distractions such as pictures and unnecessary equipment off the desk, turn off social media including gaming systems and Facebook while you work so you’re not tempted to switch gears to check on posts.
- Strive to develop an interest in each subject you’re studying. Remember: Concentration is automatic when interest is high. Try to see the relationship between the subject which your are trying to concentrate and the ultimate goals you have set for yourself. See the value of what you are doing; visualize yourself using the materials in a real-life situation.
- If possible, plan to study in a single place. All of us are creatures of habit. We have places for worship, amusement, sleeping, and eating, so why not have a place to study? Conduct no other activities there. Forge a mental link: When I sit here, I work.
- Begin working the minute you sit down at your desk. Do not dilly-dally, this is an unconscious attempt to put off an unhappy task.
- Surround yourself with people who value what you’re doing. The opinions and behaviors of others act as the strongest possible suggestion and we are all susceptible. We act in ways our companions imply are proper. Fortunately, we can select those with whom we associate.
